Sailing single handed in a round the buoys race is a real test of skill and ability so it was a surprise when the entire fleet comprised of B division boats. It is supposed that the best sailors and best boats are in the A division so where were they in this the ultimate test?
Sunday was a beautiful sunny day with a nice breeze with a good beat out to Motuterakihi Island followed by a kite run back to the finish in the Kerikeri River. Setting a kite single handed is a challenge and so it proved with lots of dramas including getting kites around the keel and twists aplenty.
That Girl made a great start and took a lead which she held all the way around the course followed for most of the way by Bedouin who was passed just before the finish line by Wavelength.
The handicap result was very close with Zuma winning by 15 seconds from That Girl with Wavelength only 30 seconds further back. In fact only 2 minutes covered the first 5 boats.
A testing satisfying day for those that completed the challenge.

A fleet of 28 yachts turned out for the eighth Craig Investment Rum race organized by the Kerikeri Cruising Club as they get into the business end of the series. An Easterly of 15 knots faced the four divisions and the Officer of the Day had set a very long course which resulted in some boats failing to complete within the time limit.
C division got away in good order on a shorter course and completed in an hour and a half with Bob Upperton’s big concrete ketch first over the line followed by the H28 of Max Sceats and Malcolm Sexton’s trailer sailor Blue Moon. La Pajara won the handicap from Blue Moon and Kotahi.
B division faced a long beat out to Motuterakihi Island in a short slop left over from a week of Easterly’s before reaching across to Flat Island and a long flat run back to Doves Bay where they rounded a buoy and proceeded to beat back out to The Brothers and across to Kent Passage before a run home. A total of 12 miles. After leading on the beat Golden Delicious (Brian White) was passed on the run by Coyote Blue (Tim Bingham) who held his lead to cross the line a minute ahead with Bedouin (Barry Williams) a minute and a half back in third. On handicap however, Golden Delicious snuck in by 4 seconds from Zuma (Hillary Johnson) with Bedouin just 15 seconds back in third. Great handicapping!
The big cat Razzel (Judy Gatland) showed the A division around the course to cross the line 6 minutes ahead of Steve Millers Farr 1020 Hicky Burr with Geoff Pye’s big Farr 1220 Wirruna in third. Hicky Burr won the bottle of rum for first on handicap from Witch Wind (Ric McCready) and Gavin Wakelin in Wasted Away.
Four A class cats contested the Catamaran division with Cat Can Do first over the line from Signs at Work and News for U. Handicap honours went to News For U from Shoot the Gap and Signs at Work. Don’t you just love those names!

An easterly breeze of 15 knots welcomed a good fleet of boats for the Mondo Travel Wednesday series race 8. Everyone enjoyed the slightly longer course out around Moturoa island with the first half of the race upwind and a long downwind run home.
Vixen6 continued their good form in B division being right on the money at the start and leading out the inlet. They were eventually headed by Golden Delicious and Bedouin for line honours but did enough to take the win on handicap.
The A division fleet had a congested start with everyone wanting the outer distance end of the line on starboard - Jive Talkin timed their run perfectly and was first over the start line. Animal Biscuits fought back to take line honours followed by Deep Throttle. Valentine added to their good performance at the bay regatta to win on handicap and Wasted Away enjoyed the downwind run to take second place on handicap.

As the long hot dry summer rolls on the Kerikeri Cruising Club starts the New Year with its traditional Round the Islands race sponsored by Craig Partridge yachts. With a 10 to 15 knot breeze and a beautiful sunny day the A division galloped away on a reach to Flat Island and around the Black Rocks before a kite run down to Brampton Buoy. Deep Throttle (Justin Ferris) established a big lead over Jive Talking (Ray Haslar) and Physical Favours (Pete Woods). She held this lead all the way to take line honours and the handicap double from Jive and Ric McCready in Witch Wind.
B division saw a sport trailer sailor Paperchase (Brett Sheldon) entered which sent some shivers down the spines of the other B division boats. They were proved to be right to worry as Paperchase smoked away never to be seen again. She crossed the line 8 minutes ahead of Wavelength (Ron Berrington) with Coyote Blue (Tim Bingham) another 7 minutes further back. Paperchase also took the handicap prize from Vixen 6 (John Wallace) and Wavelength.
The Traditional fleet was very well supported perhaps in part due to the very extensive prize list exclusively for them. One of the starters was listed on the start list as 100 years old. This division was keenly fought although some of the entrants would have preferred a mainly reaching course as going to windward was not their forte. Penelope came in first over the line followed by Trixie Newton in Sagacious and Katrina Upperton in Mokena. However, Mokena turned the tables by winning the handicap division from Penelope and Sagacious. The lucky draw prizes for this division was extensive with wet weather gear and inflatable life jackets plus bags of “goody’s” for all traditional starters. When the word gets around the Traditional fleet the numbers for next year’s race are sure to increase.

The sixth race in the A1 Security 2 handed race was the final race in the series and the strong fleet was right on its mettle as was proved by the very tight start into a fresh NW wind. The Kerikeri Cruising Club has been very pleased by the strong interest shown by competitors and this is becoming a major part of its busy summer programme.
The course worked its way out to Flat Island on a 2 sail reach which made life a little easier for the crews and in fact there was only a little kite work over the whole course to test the forward hands. However, Animal Biscuits found the lack of the weight of a third man on the outriggers a real handicap causing them to go for a swim not once but twice.
Deep Throttle (Justin Ferris) crossed the line six minutes ahead of Richard Tingey’s Northern Rebel with a wet Animal Biscuits third.
Northern Rebel also won the double by being first on handicap just 5 seconds ahead of Bedouin (Barry Williams) with Hicky Burr (Steve Miller) half a minute back in third. On handicap, only five minutes covered the whole fleet which is a major tribute to the handicapper’s black art. With such widely diverse designs and types it is extremely difficult to handicap these boats fairly and the handicapper is starting to get a real handle on his task.
While overall results were not available on the night this series has been very hard fought and the sponsors A1 Security must be happy with the enthusiasm shown for this event.
