Frank De Vries sailing the Farr 1020 Petty Cash showed the young ones how it is done by taking out the handicap section of the Kerikeri Cruising Clubs third two handed race on November 14th sponsored by Truweld. Bearing in mind that Kites are flown more than once, these races require a degree of fitness and skill.
Thirsty Work [Mark Beauchamp] was second on handicap just 7 seconds back followed by Craig Partridge on the sport boat Animal Biscuits.
Animal Biscuits grabbed line honours from Razzel [David Blair] with Northern Rebel [Richard Tingey] third.
Northern Rebel won the PHRF section from Thirsty Work and Wasted Away.
Thirteen boats faced the starter on a pleasant night watched by a large crowd attending a private function at the Sails Restaurant in the Kerikeri Cruising Clubs clubhouse.

The fourth wed night race in the series sponsored by Mondo Travel and organized by the Kerikeri Cruising Club saw overcast conditions and a light easterly breeze which attracted 22 starters.
Lots of aggressive moves and equally aggressive shouting marked the start of the B division, but the fleet got away in fairly good order with Viper[Pete Warren] taking its usual position at the head of the fleet which it was to hold and take line honours from That Girl [Peter Mclea] and Golden Delicious [Brian White].
The highly modified Pied Piper BeepBeep [Peter Hooper]won the handicap by 18 seconds from Bedouin [Barry Williams] with another 20 seconds back to That Girl. The A division start was tight as expected from the top class field with the Shaw 7.5 sport boat Animal Biscuits[Craig Partridge] leading the way home from Jive Talking [Ray Haslar] and the big Catamaran Razzel[David Blair]. The Ross 930 Wasted Away [Gavin Wakelin] won the handicap from Wise Guy [Sam Oxley] and Jive Talking.
PHRF again saw Wasted Away from Thirsty Work and Viper.
It made a very colourful sight as the fleet came down the Kerikeri River flying spinnakers of many and various designs. The watching crowd at the yacht club were entertained by close quarters racing as kites were dropped at the SW buoy to be quickly repacked and hoisted again at the outer distance mark all within sight of the clubhouse.

Bright sun and a light SW breeze on November 7th encouraged 28 starters to front up at the start line for the 3rd ABM AMRO Craigs Rum race. A lovely evening made the start watched by a good crowd at the clubhouse a real spectacle.

The handicap in A div was taken out by Hicky Burr [Steve Miller] with Physical Favours second and Petty Cash [Frank DeVries] third.
The B div saw That Girl [Pete Mclea] clear out to take line honours by 6 minutes from Wavelength [Ron Berrington] with another 2 minutes back to Bedouin the Elliot 7.9. Handicap results saw That Girl 1st from Bedouin with Cloud Nine [Warren Steadman] 3rd.
As usual the A class catamarans provided a real thrill regularly flying a hull as they raced through the fleet. First over the line was Cat Can Do followed by Signs at Work and Shoot The Gap. Don’t you just love those names? Handicap results had Shoot the Gap first from News for U and Signs at Work third.

This year’s Coastal Classic yacht race has been dominated by the Kerikeri Cruising Club against the cream of the Auckland fleets in one of the toughest races for some time. Strong winds and a great deal of it hard on the nose left crews cold, wet and very tired. The conditions ranged from fresh to almost nonexistent and tired crews finally clawed their way around Cape Brett to be met by a new wind which once again was hard on the nose.
Kerikeri Cruising club took out the team prize with Wild Card[Ray Lodge] Jive Talking[Ray Hazlar] and the tiny Shaw 7.5 Sport boat Thirsty Work [Mark Beauchamp].
In the A division Wild Card was 2nd on IRC 3rd on PHRF and 1st Bay of Island boat home. Cotton Blossom was 10th on PHRF and Jive Talking was 17th on PHRF.
Division 3 was the jewel in the crown for the club with Hicky Burr [Steve Miller] 4th over the line, 1st on PHRF and 1st 1020 yacht.
Thirsty Work was 3rd over the line, 2nd on PHRF, 1st on line Hot Rod division 2 and 1st Handicap division 2 Hot Rod division. Mesmerize another Farr 1020 was 13th on line in div 3.
In division 4 Wise Guy[Sam Oxley] came in at 4th PHRF and was the second Young 88 in a very large fleet of Young 88’s .
One has to particularly make mention of the performance of Thirsty Work which is one of the smallest boats in the fleet with almost no shelter from the elements and in conditions which certainly did not suit.
This cut down trailer sailor would have needed a crew with a very strong mental attitude and a high skill level just to finish let alone clean up. The fact that 130 odd boats withdrew out of a fleet of 230 shows just how tough this race was. This performance by the Kerikeri club ranks as one of their best and shows the strong standard in club racing at this time.
