Kerikeri Cruising
Club is proud of the achievements of its young centreboard
sailors in both national and international events. The current
Splash World Champion, 17 year old Blair Tuke is a Kerikeri
Cruising Club member. In addition to Blair, four other Kerikeri
Cruising Club members won the right to represent NZ at the
Championship in Riva del Garda, Italy in August 2006, they
were: Andy Maloney (KCC) - 3rd, Jimmy Maloney (KCC) - 4th,
Hanlon Clarke (KCC) – 10th, and Spencer Loxton (KCC)
– 25th.

Within the Club, young members can learn
to sail then train and compete in various classes of boat.
Before training and competing in any class
of boat, new sailors should learn
to sail at Lake Manuwai.
Young sailors, boys and girls from
9 yrs approximately and weight of around 28kg up to 55kg,
commonly begin their sailing in Optimists.
Throughout the year Kerikeri Optimist Sailors are involved
in an active regatta calendar incorporating the many events
open for our young sailors at home (Doves Bay), within Northland
and the North Island. There are also opportunities to compete
internationally.
Sailors up to age 15 years can join the NZ Optimist International
Dinghy Association and sailing with their own boats they progress
from the Green Fleet to Open Fleet. Some group coaching is
available and during the summer months there is after school
sailing at Doves Bay on Thursdays.
For information about the Opti group contact Brett Sheldon

Our Splash sailors are involved in
an active regatta calendar sailing from Doves Bay, Northland
Yacht Clubs and further afield. The Splash is an international
youth class centreboard dinghy that was specifically designed
to accommodate young sailors who outgrow their smaller boats.
As a guideline, Splash boats suit boys and girls aged from
13 yrs up and weighing from 55 kg.
Coaching is organized by the Splash Association and there
is opportunity to compete internationally.
There is after school sailing at Doves Bay on Thursday afternoons
through the summer months.

After learning the basics of team racing
at Lake Manuwai in Mistrals sailors graduate out to Doves
Bay and try out for the 16 man squad which trains in 420 racing
dinghies twice a week.
This is a very successful programme producing the top team
in the last four National Team Racing Championships.
Conditions are that you must attend Kerkeri High School and
be a Kerikeri Cruising Club member.
For more information contact Mrs Shona Gordon at Kerikeri
High School on 407 8916.
Laser Radials have been selected as
the women’s Olympic single handed boat by the IYRU and
Yachting NZ. We can expect to see more girls move into this
class.
It is the under 19 year old youth training boat and they can
step up from radial to full rig.
In Kerikeri, we have a small group of actively competing young
sailors who are involved in regattas with the Northland Yachting
Association calendar and further afield. Contact Jim Murdoch
(09) 407-8262 or Lyn and Graeme McCarty (09) 407-4070
